Folk tools and Pandanus sandals
Description
These simple sandals are made from the leaves of the Pandanus orbicularis, a small evergreen tree of the Pandanus family that grows south of Amami Oshima. Utilizing the texture and material of Pandanus orbicularis, they are very durable and beautifully made. They are breathable and have just the right amount of cushioning. They are one of the traditional folk tools that continue to be found in the Yaeyama Islands.
<Folk Goods>
Junichi Nakagiri and Miyuki Nakagiri are a married couple based on Ishigaki Island who make folk tools.
Attracted by the folk tools of Yaeyama and the lifestyle of the islanders behind them, he moved to Ishigaki Island with his family. He set up a home and workshop in the northern part of the island, where he learns the traditional techniques of folk tools from the grandparents of the Yaeyama Islands and continues to create them. He also applies traditional techniques to create new folk tools that are more suited to modern life.
