Yaeyama Folk Crafts Exhibition

八重山民具展

This exhibition is about making everyday items necessary for daily life in the Yaeyama region.
We will be exhibiting and selling the handiwork of Yonaha Mingu and Mingu Nakagiri.

Beautiful sea and beautiful plants I've never seen before.
The lifestyle of the people living on the island provides them with many natural treasures.
Looking back at history, people have lived self-sufficient lives, obtaining food, building homes, and creating tools.
The technique of making tools necessary for daily life from a single leaf of a familiar plant is full of wisdom and ingenuity, and also conveys the strength of the island's people.

I feel that folk implements are not made by any famous people, but are like a culmination of the wisdom of people who are struggling to get by day to day without leaving their mark on history.
Rather than just feeling that there is something special about the folk tools produced by the makers in this exhibition, we hope that you will feel and experience that they continue to produce these tools to the best of their ability, just as they have done in the past, and that they are desperately trying to pass this on to the future.
